If you can rustle up 10 people to submit painted entries here to the Speakeasy and we can have them all posted with a list of materials used and a brief write-up about the pilot by the end of November, then I'll put together something to give away (maybe a copy of Planet X).

Feel free to recruit from anywhere you want, just make sure they post their entries here.

Gentlemen, you have your orders!
Make a Fantastic Worlds-suitable jetbike and rider. Paint it up. Post it here with a cool writeup about the rider. If you want to post what FW archetype and attributes it uses, even cooler. Include a list of materials used, and what you did to make them fit together and look cooler than the other guy's.

Entries should probably be suitable for the genre - Raygun-pulp, not Star Wars or 40K, etc.

Please post your entries in this forum no later than November 30th, 2008, and put "2008 Jetbike Challenge" in the thread title, so that it's easy to find the entries afterwords.

Feel free to use this thread for smack-talk, questions, work-in-progress shots, making "vroom vroom" noises like little kids (and I know you do. Yes, you. You there at your computer. Don't bother denying it. VROOOOOMbbbbbbbbbbbbbbssssshwwwww PEW! PEW! PEW!) etc.

Post this thread around other forums, let's see who we can draw in.

I'm not sure if I'll join yet, but in case I do, one question comes to mind. Can the jetbike be something like the rocket cycle from the 1980 Flash Gordon movie? That's to say, something that has the figure standing up as opposed to sitting in a saddle? If I do model some jetbikes they'd likely be of this design, as they seem more sensible for gaming that way (no need to model separate riders - any normal, standing figure can be placed on the bike as needed).

I'm not promising to enter the contest, mind.

I defer final determination to the board admins of course, but from what I remember of the movie, it sounds like a perfectly fine idea.

Can I make a rocket powered dinosaur being ridden by a cowboy?

Because I seriously have all the parts for that. Smile

I was mainly wondering because it might not fall within some people's definition of a "bike" (visually, it'd be something more along the lines of a seat-less water scooter), and because it would not necessarily require a specific rider to be modelled in conjunction with it - though I do understand that for the sake of completeness, the finished bike should be presented with some figure or other riding in it.

Okay, how about a one-person transport, no bigger, scale-wise, than a Smart Car.

Models can ride, stand, lie-down, etc. Basically, anything that would look good for a race (and if you remember the Hanna Barbera Wacky Races you know anything goes.) Very Happy

Sounds good. Still not promising I can enter the contest (trying to focus on BA at the moment) but I'm seriously considering it. I'm watching the 1936 Flash Gordon serial right now and feeling inspired by the extremely whacky, unrealistic mechanical designs in it. The "gyro-ships" of the Lionmen are unforgettable. If I do build any vehicles for this contest, it'll probably be something in that kind of simplistic retro style as opposed to Froggy's sleek jetbike designs. They'd definitely not win the contest or anything, but I'd just be doing this for fun.

Currently my thoughts are revolving around flying discs with handlebars, or some kind of horseless hover-chariots.

Rhoderic, it's good that you are still planning to enter something. This contest really isn't about shiny prizes for me. Heck, when I first suggested it, it was just for fun. Rich sweetening the pot makes it even more fun, but the real fun will be in seeing what folks come up with.

I'll have to rethink my original idea, because it was not all that raygun-styled, but I'm sure I can cook something up. I mean, we have two months.

Like I said, it can be ANYTHING within the parameters above. Sleek works just as well as retro which could be beaten by rocket-powered dinos.

This really is about fun. Heck, I did my hover platform for Super Science Tales and could just as easily submit that. Not that I would submit anything, though I might build something just to take part in the fun.

I was thinking the same thing...

Yes, please do. You folks at Rattrap have great imaginations. Let's see them flow and make a mess all over the place.

You have a picture of that hover platform somewhere, Rich? I recall it only vaguely (actually I'd forgotten about it until you mentioned it just now) but I'd like to see it again. I think the vehicles I'll build (if I indeed build any) will be much more in the style of that than any hoverbike, although I might keep some "bike bits" like handlebars and a front screen.

My main priority is for it to be something on which I can place any miniature on a ~25mm base, so I can exchange riders freely.

I've got a couple works in progress of blue-skinned aliens on jetbikes, which I can toss into the ring. Since I started them before the contest started, would it be cheesy about trying to win with them? I'm undecided.

And yeah, I totally wasn't expecting to do this for anything other than fun and bragging rights.

I don't see that that would be a disqualifier. As long as they fit the rest of the requirements.

It's the end results, not the date of construction that is being judged.

I ordered my rider figure yesterday, so i should get that within the next week or so.

I have been looking at things around the house with new eyes now, and yes, when i found something that would be excellent for jet intakes, i made 'vroom' noises just to make sure it would be right for the job.

lol - My name is Ian and i make Vroom noises.

Hopefully i will get all i need by the end of November, but i am more into this for the fun; that and i want to race jet bikes.
